MAKING THE WORLD GREENER TOGETHER

Climate neutral for years, now climate positive

Years ago, we started making our formulas climate neutral. More climate neutral product lines gradually followed. Step by step, we went further and added other climate positive products in addition to formulas. This means that we offset more greenhouse gases than have been produced in our value chain – and thus make a positive contribution to the climate. Since our beginnings, we have relied on biodynamic farming – the most climate-friendly form of farming. In the following, we explain why this is so important to us and what we are doing to make our world a greener place bit by bit.

Important note: Breastfeeding is the best option for your baby. Follow-on milk is suitable for babies over six months old in combination with complementary weaning foods. Speak to your midwife or your paediatrician for more information.
PROTECTING THE CLIMATE OUT OF CONVICTION

What we do and why we do it

Our customers are the smallest ones, and we only want the best for them. We therefore see ourselves as having a special responsibility to make not only the present but also the future suitable for grandchildren and worth living in. Climate protection is one of our most urgent challenges. We reduce and offset the CO2 emissions of our products through various measures and projects. Our high-quality biodynamically and organically grown raw materials also play an important role in protecting the climate. And it’s been this way ever since 1934.

Demeter
ORGANIC QUALITY TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL

Demeter climate factor

Holle is a Demeter pioneer in the manufacture of baby food. The majority of our products feature the Demeter label: organic quality to the highest level. For more than 100 years, Demeter agriculture has been practising exactly what is now hailed as a sustainable trend: biodynamic farming in closed cycles, in which one step interacts sensibly with the other.
Bindung von Treibhausgasen mit gesunden Böden
Binding of greenhouse gases with healthy soils
Biomass is fed into biodynamically cultivated soil, which promotes humus build-up. A thick layer of humus, in turn, keeps the soil healthier and allows for better storage of nutrients and water. Above all, this soil is capable of capturing greenhouse gases over the long term – an important factor for the climate.

We work every day to reduce our CO2 emissions by optimising packaging and production processes. Together with long-standing partners, we are striving for more climate-friendly products.

We reduce as many greenhouse gases as possible. We offset unavoidable CO2 emissions through regional projects with organic farmers in Germany and the international “Kariba” mitigation project in Zimbabwe.

Climate statements on Holle packaging

In November 2021 Holle provided information on its climate positive credentials for the first time. Parallel to this, the first Holle products with a climate positive logo appeared on store shelves, with more rolled out as time went on. For many years now we have been calculating the Co2e footprint of our products and working to reduce it. Compensation for unavoidable emissions is an important part of this and we firmly believe that meaningful compensation projects need to be supported if we are to achieve climate goals.

Criticism of so-called ‘green claims’, such as climate positive credentials, is something which we take very seriously. We have learned that this topic is so complex that it cannot be explained clearly and understandably on product packaging. In the interests of transparent product communications and to avoid confusing consumers, we decided back in January 2023 to remove the climate positive logo from all Holle packaging. Avoiding the disposal of unnecessary packaging is important to us, so this logo will be gradually phased out as we reprint packaging for the relevant products. Depending on sales of individual products, it could take up to a year after the packaging changeover (i.e. reprinting of packaging without a climate positive logo) until the climate positive logo has disappeared from Holle products on store shelves.

We will, however, continue to support our projects to protect the environment and resources. Holle follows global and legal developments very carefully and we are continuously updating our measures accordingly, also on this website.

„Becoming climate positive is the next logical step on our journey towards creating a positive future for all of our grandchildren.“

OUR PROJECTS

Our contribution to a
climate-friendly world

In addition to reducing and preventing greenhouse gases, national (in Germany) and international emission reduction projects represent an important pillar in our fight to protect the climate. We are committed to working together with a wide range of partners in various locations on lots of important projects.

Improving soil

At Gut Döllnitz farm in Hall and Frankenhof farm in Heilsbronn (both situated in Germany), we are reducing greenhouse gases and supporting the formation of valuable humus.

Kariba forest protection project

Each year, the Kariba project protects around 785,000 hectares of forest, along with the vulnerable and endangered species that live within the forest and much more. This project also offsets more than 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 by preventing deforestation in this region.

Biodynamic farming

We improve our soils with humus, which allows the soil to bind more CO2 and makes an important contribution to protecting the climate.

Goats in the Black Forest

In an effort to maintain agricultural structures in the Black Forest, we are helping farmers convert their farms to produce Demeter goat’s milk.

Biodiversity

More Demeter, more biodiversity: This simple formula explains the contribution that biodynamic farming makes to species protection. That is why we use raw materials in unique Demeter quality to produce our products and always promote organic farming.

The seeds of sustainability

The ear of a corn perfectly symbolises how we view the concept of sustainability. It represents the origins of the Holle brand, which started processing grain in line with biodynamic standards over 85 years ago. It is also used in our company logo. The ear also represents the fruit that can be grown thanks to our holistic, future-oriented thinking and action: a sustainable, social and fair future.

Protecting the climate & saving resources
Protecting the climate is our most important shared responsibility as we move into the future. Our milk formulas and other products are already climate-positive and we are continuing to work on avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions and we are taking an important step towards a climate-friendly future for all of our grandchildren. We use resources carefully – biodynamic farming is particularly resource friendly – and optimise our consumption of water and energy.

Building an environmentally sustainable future
Organic and biodynamic farming is based on the concept of a sustainable closed-loop system. We have been biodynamic since 1934. The majority of our products feature the Demeter label. In this way, we promote healthy and regenerative methods of cultivation that give more back to the soil than they take from it and help to promote biodiversity. This means that we are actively shaping our future ecological sustainability.
Togetherness
Togetherness
Standing up for people &
society
Meaningful work, involvement, lifelong learning, trust and appreciation – these are the pillars of the sense of togetherness at Holle. As a family business, equal opportunities and quality of life are just as important to us as providing digital ways of working. We are working hard to create a better society with fundraising projects organised by our employees and our company philosophy.
